My Story

Although both of Winnie’s parents are alive, they are in very poor health.  Her father cannot work due to severe, untreated arthritis, while her mother suffers from chronic chest pain.  Winnie’s mother earns a small amount of money from small-scale farming in neighbors’ gardens.

Since Winnie’s father became disabled, the family could no longer afford to eat more than once or twice in a day.  One of seven children, Winnie is the only child in her family to have received any formal education.  After completing primary school in 2005, Winnie could not afford to begin secondary school.  Instead of going to school, she worked with her mother in the gardens to get food for survival.  At night, she slept in a grass-thatched hut where she shared a single papyrus mat with her sister.  After three months of struggling like this, Winnie was brought to New Hope in 2006.

Winnie is now under the full care of New Hope.  She dreams of becoming a doctor so that “I can treat my father’s arthritis.”
