Hadija’s Story

One of seven children, Hadija comes from a very poor family sharing a one-room shanty house in the Arubaine slums of Busia.  For several years, Hadija’s mother earned small amounts of money from local business operations, which were the primary source of income for the family.  However, after her mother died of AIDS in August of 2007, Hadija’s living conditions rapidly deteriorated.   Her father, who is HIV positive, earns less than one dollar a day and is deeply in debt from high burial costs for his wife.

With barely enough to survive at home, Hadija’s father sent her to live with an elder sister, who has her own children and also makes less than $1/day.  Rather than attend school, Hadija was forced to wake up before sunrise to carry large bags of potatoes from the family garden, located 6 kilometers from home, for sale in the local market.  When funds fell too low, Hadija’s sister would send her back to live with the father, who would soon send her away to another sister.

At the time our community liaison identified Hadija as a possible candidate for our program, she was attending school only occasionally, sharing a small papyrus mat and bed-sheet at night and eating just one meal a day.

Hadija is now under the full care of New Hope Africa Children Ministries.  Hadija’s dream is to work as a nurse in the capital city of Kampala.
