My Story

Alamanzani never knew his mother, who abandoned the family when he was still very young.  Before coming to New Hope, Alamanzani lived with his father, a boda-boda (bicycle taxi) operator earning less than two dollars per day, and 3 siblings in a small, one-room shanty in the Arubaine slums of Busia.

Alamanzani could not go to school regularly due to a lack of school supplies, which his father could not afford.  On the many days he was sent away from class, Alamanzani would work his older brother, Musa, collecting scrap metal from dumps and side-streets and then selling the scraps over the border in Kenya.  On a typical day, Alamanzani earned the equivalent of $0.13, ate no more than twice, and shared a papyrus mat at night.  Not attending school regularly and spending most days completely unsupervised, Alamanzani was identifed as a child at high risk of becoming a street kid and brought to our program by his father. Alamazani wants to be a pilot.

Alamanzani is now under the full care of New Hope.
